You know I have been around along time and visited some of what I consider the best bars in the world. I have had drinks from London to Honolulu, Chicago to tortola and cabo to cancun. I relish a good drink. The problem is there are few folks willing to make a quality drink these days. Its just splish splash and in the glass and that will be 10 bucks please. Well enough of that. On these pages I will present time tested recipes that I personally have tweaked to perfection. If you want your friends and family to rave about your mixology then check out bud's recipes.
Lets start with what I consider the drink of all drinks. It is a party maker in a glass and boys if you want to get lucky and girls if you want to get just about anything from your man you want then have him or her slug a few of these down.
Long Island Iced Tea(by bud)
Ok so the friends are coming over and you want to serve a special drink This one is a great choice. Heres how to do it: You can't serve a long island and have it be rated a mixologists dream in just any glass. You need a tall thin glass made for this drink. No wide mouth or short cocktail glass will do. It just screws up the proportions. Long islands need to be made in a tall skinny glass. You have all seen the type I am talking about. Ok so we need some preparation first if you are going to make repeated drinks for a gathering and actually it is nice to have this already in your bar. It won't go bad on you. I take an old bottle(not a fifth but the half gallon type that maybe once held vodka or gin and has a nice lid). In this bottle put equal proportions of gin, vodka, white rum. Put half a proportion of triple sec. Now I have to diverge here for a minute. A true long island has tequila as well but to me it gives too much bite and tequila takes over the drink. Now most folks don't like that and game over. With that in mind I leave the tequila out. If you must have it then it should be about 1/4 the proportion of the other booze. So again fill your bottle with equal proportions of gin, white rum, and vodka and half a proportion of triple sec. Now you say that is hard and time consuming to measure all that out. No way Jose. Grab the bottle and put your thumb about 2 inches up from the bottom and pour in the first alcohol. Then move your thumb up two inches and pour in the second and then the third. Then move up only one inch and pour in the triple sec and if you must a half inch and pour in the tequila. Now you have your Long island booze all premixed so from here it is as easy as making a vodka tonic. I label this bottle in some fashion (Toms Tea, or Bobs Blitz or whatever) and keep it in my bar with all the other booze.
Now we are ready to make the best long island you have ever tasted. We need to fill and I mean fill the entire skinny glass with ice. Don't skimp on this step. It is critical to have a full glass of ice. Pour from your premixed bottle until the glass with ice is just under half full of the premixed alcohol. At this point some of the ice will have melted or settled down in the glass so add more ice until the ice fills the glass again. What we have now is a tall skinny glass full of ice and liquid about half way(just under). Now take any sweet and sour mix and fill the glass up to 3/4 full. This too is critical as most bars and novices put way way too much sweet and sour. The booze is just under half and the sweet and sour another 1/4. Now we finish the other 1/4 by topping off with coke or pepsi. Please do not use diet coke or pepsi as you might as well dump it down the toilet. The entire taste of the drink will change. Use real coke as for gods sake you are only using a quarter of the glass and it is a skinny glass at that. You should mix with a long bar spoon and garnish with a lemon or cherry. Please no umbreallas. If you follow these directions carefully the drink will go down like lemonade. It will not be too sweet nor taste of acohol. The idea is to make it a pleasant drink to imbibe. If you do that they will imbibe another and so on and you will be the host with the most. Cheers.
Bloody Mary Supreme
So what drink is best and is actually encouraged before 10 a.m.? Best of all no one frowns when you order one as if you are some kind of alcoholic degenerate as the sun is rising. Why a Bloody Mary of course. Shoot thats my kind of drink to wake up the senses and get a vacation or celebration day off to a great start. It is Better than orange juice that is for sure. Ok so you might ask what makes boomerbuds bloody mary good enough to deserve the label bloody mary supreme. Ok I will tell you. It is not the vodka nor the celery nor the beans. You guessed it, that leaves the mix. Now any subpar bartender can go buy stock bloody mary mix and call it a day, but if you want people clamoring for more then take the time to make a real mix for yourself.
Take a 48 oz can or jug of tomatoe juice(jug is better as it can be used to store it in for a few days to a week at least). Now add 2 jigger worstershire sause, 1 jigger of rose's lime juice, 1 teaspoon celery salt, 1 tablespoon "course" pepper, 1-2 tablespoon horseradish(depending on how hot you like it), and 1 cube beef bullion disolved in a cup of hot water, and 11 dashes of tobasco . Mix all these ingredients together and put back in your jug for dispensing. This is a drink that by tinkering to taste with the horseradish, tobasco, and worstershire, can be suited to individual taste. It is the best by far bloody mary mix I have ever tasted.
So from here it is a stroll to the endzone. Fill a glass, and for this drink most any shape glass will do, with ice. Again do not skimp on ice(fill the damn glass). Add 1-2 jiggers or shots of vodka(1 for the lightweight and two for the macho man or lady) and then fill with the bloody mary mix you just made. You can add a bean or celery or even an olive. I will give in and say an umbrella is ok if you must. LOL. What a great start to a day(hopefully a weekend or vacation day). Bottoms up and enjoy. For some of you who want to wow your friends with your knowledge you can make a "bloody maria" by using tequila instead of vodka. Ole'
